HORSE POOP

HORSE POOP

Yes it’s gross but you know some of them just can’t resist it!!!
.
I am not a horsey person, but I am reliably informed it’s the time of year for worming horses (Spring Time). Please do not let your dog eat horse poop as the consumption of massive doses of Ivermectin can be incredibly dangerous for your dog, regardless of breed.  Just today I read of a Working Cocker Spaniel who has found himself in a comatose state at the vets having eaten horse poop from a freshly wormed horse.
.
If you have a dog in one of the herding varieties (Border Collie, Shelty, Rough Collie etc) please be aware that there is a genetic mutation called MDR1 which can affect them. Dogs with this genetic mutation can have serious adverse reactions to various medications including Ivermectin (worming medication) and as such it is vital that you do not let them eat horse poop when out – particularly at this time of year.
.
If you are worried as to whether your dog carries the MDR1 genetic defect, you can have a cheek swab DNA test done to tell you for sure. There are many labs where you could get this done, Laboklin is one I’ve used personally who are very good and will have the results back to you in around a week for about £45(ish).
